A member of police’s Special Branch (SB) was beaten to death and his son critically injured after they were attacked by a group of people during a dispute over the parking of a car in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, on Saturday night.
Sub-Inspector Md Altaf Hossain, 58, was attacked along with his 26-year-old younger son, Ariful Islam, at around 8pm in the Borodeshi area of Aminbazar.
Police said the two were trying to calm an argument between two groups over a car parked in front of a T-shirt factory in the Borodeshi Madina Housing Area when 10 to 15 people allegedly attacked them.
They were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared Altaf dead on arrival. His son was undergoing treatment in critical condition.
Md Saiful Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station, said police were at the scene and that further details would be disclosed later.
Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Shameema Parvin said Altaf was attacked near his home over what she described as a “trivial matter” involving the parking of a car.
She said law enforcement agencies were working to identify and arrest those involved.
According to police, Altaf was posted at the SB office in Malibagh, Dhaka. He was from Sadhupara village in the Enayetpur area of Sirajganj and lived with his family in the Borodeshi Madina City area of Aminbazar.
SB Savar Zone Assistant Sub-Inspector Masud Rana said Altaf had a home in Aminbazar and that police were investigating the motive behind the killing.
