File PhotoPresident Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is scheduled to visit his home district of Thakurgaon on Sunday (September 6) for the first time since being elected president.
The two-day visit has created a festive atmosphere across the northern district, with extensive cleaning and beautification carried out throughout the town.
The president is expected to arrive in Thakurgaon this morning. Upon reaching his home district, he will first visit the Goalpāra-Senua cemetery in the town to pay respects at the graves of his parents. In the afternoon, he is scheduled to attend a civic reception organized by conscious citizens of the district at the Government Boys’ High School’s large playground.
On Monday morning, he is expected to lay the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University before returning to Bangabhaban in the afternoon.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected president by a vote of members of parliament on August 20. Since then, people in his birthplace Thakurgaon have been celebrating his election. His first visit to the district as president has further intensified the excitement among local residents.
However, alongside the celebrations, residents have expressed a range of expectations from the president. They hope he will take initiatives to address the district’s long-standing problems and that his visit will open new opportunities for Thakurgaon’s development and growth.
The city’s appearance has changed with extensive painting and beautification ahead of the president’s arrival, while residents are eagerly awaiting his visit with renewed expectations. Locals hope the first presidential visit will go beyond celebrations and create new possibilities for the district’s development.
Residents particularly expect effective measures to improve education, healthcare, communications and infrastructure. A civic reception has been organized to make the president’s first visit memorable.
Dr Abu Mohammad Khairul Kabir, convener of the Civic Reception Committee, said, “There is widespread joy and excitement among the people of Thakurgaon over the president’s first visit. He will be accorded a reception organized by civil society. We expect an attendance of more than one lakh people regardless of political affiliation.”
Meanwhile, security measures have been strengthened across the district ahead of the president’s visit. Surveillance has been increased on important roads, at key installations and at the event venue, while members of the law enforcement agencies have been placed on alert.
