Masud Chowdhury shown arrested in ACC case over alleged embezzlement

Former lawmaker and retired Lieutenant General Masud Uddin Chowdhury has been shown arrested in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of embezzling Tk119 crore through worker recruitment to Malaysia.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Fayez issued the order on Monday following an application by the ACC. The application had earlier been submitte on 25 March by the case investigation officer, ACC Assistant Director Md. Abul Kalam Azad. ACC prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi confirmed the matter.

According to the ACC petition, Masud Uddin Chowdhury and others allegedly colluded and abused official authority to obtain appointments as recruitment agents for sending workers to Malaysia.

Although the government-fixed fee was Tk78,990, the accused allegedly charged workers extra money. Authorities claim they illegally collected an additional Tk1.193 billion in several stages by exploiting recruited workers.

The petition further alleged that the illegally obtained funds were laundered through concealment, transfer, movement, and conversion of assets. Cases were filed against the accused under the Penal Code, the Money Laundering Prevention Act, and anti-corruption laws.

The ACC also argued that if Masud Uddin Chowdhury were granted bail, he could interfere with the investigation, making his formal arrest in this case necessary for a fair inquiry.

Earlier, on the night of March 22, officers from the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch arrested him from his residence in Baridhara DOHS in the capital. Since then, he has been taken on remand several times in connection with different cases.
