At least 12 people sustained injuries in clashes at Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET) over the appointment of a new vice-chancellor on Sunday.
The violence erupted around 10:00am at the university’s main gate as rival groups chased each other and hurled brick chips, according to witnesses.
The government on Thursday appointed Prof Dr Mohammad Iqbal, a prof at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, as the new vice-chancellor of DUET.
Soon after the appointment order was issued, a section of students launched protests on the campus and locked the university gate on Thursday night.
As part of the ongoing movement, the protesters organised a “red card” programme at the main gate on Sunday morning.
The protesting students alleged that outsiders attacked them during the programme, triggering the clashes. As tensions escalated, police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds and bring the situation under control, leaving the campus area tense.
Students claimed that 10 to 12 protesters suffered injuries in the incident. Police later deployed additional personnel in and around the campus to maintain order.
The demonstrators said appointing an “outsider” as vice-chancellor could hamper the university’s institutional character and long-term development plans. They demanded that the post be filled from among DUET’s senior and qualified teachers.
