Final arguments begin today in case against Obaidul Quader, six others

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is set to begin hearing final arguments on Sunday in a crimes against humanity case filed over the July mass uprising against Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and six other senior leaders of the party and its affiliated organisations.

The proceedings will begin before a judicial panel of International Crimes Tribunal-2 led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. The prosecution is scheduled to present its arguments first, followed by the defence.

The testimony phase of the case concluded on 27 April after the cross-examination of the investigation officer, Ahmed Naser Uddin Mohammad, who appeared as the 26th witness.

State-appointed defence lawyers Lokman Howlader and Ishrat Jahan conducted the cross-examination on behalf of the seven accused. Testimony of the investigation officer had begun on 19 April.

Following the completion of witness testimonies, the tribunal fixed 17 May for the submission of final arguments.

The other accused in the case are Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Wali Asif Inan.
