Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained an Indian couple while they were allegedly entering Bangladesh illegally through the Borlekha border in Moulvibazar early today.

The detainees are Kamrul Ahmed, 32, and his wife Husna Begum Laskar, 24, of Lala village in Hailakandi district of India, said Borlekha Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman Khan.

The couple were detained from the Gandhai area of Dakshin Shahbazpur union in Borlekha upazila around 6:30am. Indian identity cards and mobile phones were recovered from them at the time, according to the BGB.

During initial questioning, the couple admitted to crossing the border illegally and entering Bangladesh.

The OC said on Friday afternoon that the BGB handed over the detainees to police.

"We are verifying their identities and processing the matter. A case is being filed by the BGB, and necessary legal action will be taken accordingly," he said.

BGB-52 Beanibazar Battalion Commander Lt Col Md Ataur Rahman said after preliminary investigation it was found that they are Indian citizens. They were held while trying to enter Bangladesh. The filing of a case is underway.
