No legal bar to Ivy’s release as SC upholds HC bail orders

The Supreme Court today upheld the High Court orders that on April 30 granted ad-interim bail to Selina Hayat Ivy, former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation, in two separate murder cases filed in connection with the July uprising.

Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Justice Md Rezaul Haque passed “no order” on two separate petitions filed by the state seeking a stay on the HC orders granting bail.

Following the apex court chamber judge’s orders, there is no legal bar to Ivy being released from jail, as the Appellate Division recently upheld her HC bail in 10 other cases, SM Hridoy Rahman, a lawyer for Ivy, told.

Senior lawyer Md Motaher Hossain Sazu and lawyers SM Siddiqur Rahman and Hridoy Rahman appeared for Ivy, while Deputy Attorney General Syeda Shajia Sharmin represented the state during the hearing of the petitions today.

On April 30, the HC granted ad-interim bail to Ivy and also issued two separate rules asking the government to explain why she should not be granted permanent bail in the cases.

The cases were filed with Siddhirganj Police Station in Narayanganj over the killings of Selim Mondal and Abdus Salam during the July uprising in 2024.

Ivy was shown arrested in the cases immediately after the High Court granted her bail in five other cases on February 26 this year.

The former Narayanganj mayor was arrested on May 9 last year in connection with the murder of RMG worker Minarul and was later shown arrested in nine other criminal cases.

The High Court granted bail to Ivy in all 10 cases on November 9 last year and February 26 this year following separate bail petitions filed on her behalf.
