Bus services between Rajshahi and rest of country suspended

Bus services connecting Rajshahi with other districts and long-distance destinations across the country have been suspended following a dispute over the announcement of a new committee for the Rajshahi District Motor Workers’ Union.

The sudden disruption has caused severe inconvenience for passengers traveling to Dhaka and other parts of the country.

A section of transport workers halted bus operations on Monday at 8:30am. Since then, no buses have been seen departing from Rajshahi city terminals on scheduled routes. Many passengers who arrived at bus stations for urgent travel were forced to return due to the unexpected suspension.

According to workers, the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation announced a new 21-member committee for the Rajshahi District Motor Workers’ Union on Sunday. Under the new committee, Rafiqul Islam Pakhi was appointed president and Mominul Islam Momin general secretary.

However, a faction of workers launched protests against the committee, arguing that it was formed without an election. They demanded cancellation of the newly announced body and called for a three-month convening committee followed by prompt elections.

Earlier, on April 23, clashes broke out between two groups of workers in the Shiroil area of Rajshahi over control of the union office. The confrontation involved chases, counter-chases, and vandalism. Authorities later attempted to restore calm through a compromise arrangement that led to the new committee announcement.

Newly appointed president Rafiqul Islam Pakhi said he was aware of the suspension and discussions were underway with relevant stakeholders to normalize the situation as quickly as possible.
