Forkan Mollah, who killed his wife, and three daughters in Gazipur, has likely committed suicide by jumping into the Padma river, said the district’s Police Superintendent Md Sharif Uddin on Thursday.
He jumped into the river and was not seen afterwards, the police officer added at a press briefing.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has already recovered his belongings, including a bag and some deserted clothes, from the Padma Bridge.
Earlier in the day, a body was found floating on the river, but officials were yet to confirm it was Forkan’s.
He was the driver of a privately owned car and lived with his family at a rented home in Rautkona village, Kapasia upazila, Gazipur.
On Friday night, Forkan drugged his wife, three daughters and brother-in-law by mixing heavy sedatives with dinner items. As they became unconscious, Forkan slit their throats with sharp weapons.
According to the forensic report, the youngest daughter, aged 1.5 years, was strangled to death.
After committing the crime, he reportedly left a note at the house saying that he killed his family out of anger over his wife's "extra marital affair." However, the wife's relatives told media that it was Forkan who was engaged in "illicit relationships," and the issue had caused consistent discord within the family.
The following morning, he phoned his brother-in-law informing him of the incident and confessing to the crime.
On Saturday night, his father-in-law filed a murder case naming him as the prime accused. Four other unidentified individuals were also named as suspects.
