The High Court (HC) has issued a rule asking why the allocation of space to hawkers on roads and footpaths in the capital should not be declared illegal and unlawful.
The rule was issued on Tuesday by a High Court bench led by Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty.
The court also sought an explanation as to why allocating roads and footpaths to hawkers under the Dhaka Hawker Management Policy-2026 should not be declared inconsistent with the Constitution.
The rule came in response to a writ petition filed by Advocate Md Shoaibuzzaman challenging the Dhaka Hawker Management Policy-2026.
The court directed the Local Government Secretary, Law Secretary, administrators of the two Dhaka city corporations, and other relevant authorities to respond to the rule.
