The National Moon Sighting Committee on Monday evening announced that the holy Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated on 28 May, as the Dhul-Hijjah crescent moon has been sighted over Bangladeshi sky.

Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad announced the development after chairing a meeting of the Moon Sighting Committee at the Baitul Mukarram mosque.

In the meeting, also present were Islamic Foundation director general, Meteorological Department officials, Baitul Mukarram’s Khatib and members of the Moon Sighting Committee, among others.

The moon was sighted in Cox's Bazar district. District administrations, Islamic Foundation’s field offices and the Meteorological Department provided data on moon sighting, said ministry sources.

Eid-ul-Azha is one of the two biggest religious festivals for Muslim devotees. It is celebrated to honour Prophet Ibrahim’s historic attempt to sacrifice his most beloved thing for pleasing the Almighty.
