State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said on Monday that the bilateral ties between Bangladesh and India would not be affected due to changes in political leadership in the neighbouring country’s West Bengal state.

She made the remarks during a briefing at her ministry in Dhaka.

Shama said that whoever comes to power in West Bengal, it will not have any impact here.

Bangladesh will continue to work while safeguarding its own interests, she said.

Referring to issues such as push-in incidents and the Ganges water sharing treaty, the state minister said discussions with India on these matters will continue and Bangladesh remains hopeful about the treaty.

She also expressed optimism that visa processing with India will soon return to normal.
