Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived in Sylhet on Saturday morning.
A US-Bangla Airlines flight carrying him and his wife, Zubaida Rahman, landed at Sylhet MAG Osmani International Airport at around 10am, a responsible airport source said.
Sylhet City Corporation Administrator and Sylhet District BNP President Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury said this is Tarique Rahman’s first visit to Sylhet since assuming office as prime minister.
According to an itinerary signed by Protocol Officer-1 of the Prime Minister’s Office Ujjal Hossain, the prime minister is scheduled to visit the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) at 10:30am.
He will then attend the inauguration and a rally marking a Tk4,500 crore project for flood control and waterlogging relief in the Sylhet City Corporation area at Chandnighat at 11am.
At 12pm, he is set to inaugurate the excavation of the Basia Canal (Basia River) in Kandigaon, Sadar upazila, in memory of Ziaur Rahman, who first initiated the canal project in 1978.
Later in the day, at 3pm, he will inaugurate the "Natun Kuri Sports-2026" competition at Sylhet District Stadium, aimed at identifying talent among children aged 12–14.
He is also scheduled to attend a party meeting at the Sylhet District Shilpakala Academy at 5pm before departing for Dhaka by air at 7pm.
Party leaders and activists in Sylhet have expressed enthusiasm over his visit.
