A large-scale operation by joint security forces has begun in the Jungle Salimpur area of Sitakunda in Chattogram.
Around 4,000 members of the army, police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) joined the operation, which started at about 5:40am on Monday.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Media) of Chattogram District Police, Md Russell, said members of the joint forces had launched the drive and further details would be provided later. Law enforcement agencies cordoned off the Jungle Salimpur area early in the morning.
Checkpoints have been set up at entry and exit points to prevent suspects from escaping.
The operation comes after RAB-7 Assistant Sub-Inspector Motaleb Hossain Bhuiya was killed in a militant attack while conducting an operation in the forest area on 19 January. A case was filed with Sitakunda Police Station following the incident, naming Mohammad Yasin as the prime accused.
The case also mentions 29 other individuals, including Nurul Haque Bhandari, along with around 200 unidentified suspects.
Jungle Salimpur is located in a hilly and remote area near Chattogram city. Illegal settlements have developed there over the past four decades, and criminal groups have reportedly used the area as a safe haven. Hills in the area have also been cut to facilitate illegal land trading.
Local sources said two armed groups are active in the area, reportedly led by Mohammad Yasin and Rokon Uddin.
