Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh have brought back three Bangladeshi youths from the custody of Myanmar’s rebel group Arakan Army.
The three were handed over to BGB through the Friendship Bridge at the Ghumdhum border in Bandarban on Friday noon.
The returnees are Md Bappi, 28, Osman Gani Rabbi, 18, and Md Jony Mia, 22.
Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam, commanding officer of 34 BGB in Cox’s Bazar, said one of them was detained by the Arakan Army from the Tumbru border area on 14 February, while the other two were picked up on 28 February when they went fishing in the Balukhali River area of Ukhiya, adjacent to the border.
He said the BGB authorities maintained constant communication with the Arakan Army based on information provided by the victims’ families and managed to bring them back on Friday through necessary coordination and persistent efforts.
The three youths have been handed over to their families, he added.
Khairul Alam said, “BGB is performing its duties along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in the southern region to ensure border security. Besides guarding the frontier, the Cox’s Bazar battalion is also working professionally to prevent smuggling, drugs, illegal intrusion and different transnational border crimes.”
