Narsingdi girl was murdered by stepfather after ‘gang-rape’, police say

The stepfather of a teenage girl, whose body was found in a mustard field in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi, has confessed in court to murdering her to cover up a previous gang-rape, according to police.

Narsingdi Superintendent of Police Abdullah-Al-Faruk shared their findings at a media briefing on Saturday.

According to the SP, the confession of the father, Ashraf Ali, came after the primary suspects in the case, Nur Mohammad alias Nura and Hazrat Ali, gave statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The victim’s body was recovered on the morning of Feb 26 from a mustard field in Darikandi of Madhabdi, with a scarf wrapped around her neck.

While the murder case, filed by the victim’s mother, initially alleged that a gang led by Nura had snatched her daughter from Ashraf on the night of Feb 25, the police investigation revealed a different sequence of events.

"The girl was involved in a relationship with Nura. However, on the night of Feb 10, four individuals, Hazrat Ali, Ebadul, Zaman, and Ghaffar, gang-raped her at Hazrat’s house," Faruk told reporters.

The police officer added that Ashraf later orchestrated a plan to kill his stepdaughter to avoid further social humiliation.

"On the night of Feb 25, Ashraf was purportedly taking the girl to the house of a colleague named Suman. On the way, he strangled her to death with a scarf," the police officer said.

Ashraf told investigators he was "frustrated by the girl's activities" and felt socially belittled, which drove him to the killing.
