Ten people, including women and children, were burned in a gas leak explosion at a house in the Kamarpara area of Turag in the capital.
They have been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The incident occurred early Friday, on the second floor of a building in Sector 10 of Kamarpara.
The injured are Rubel, 30; his pregnant wife Sonia Akter, 25; their daughter Roza, 3; Sonia’s elder sister Riya, 27; Rubel’s cousin Enayet, 32; his wife Delera, 28; their son Junayed, 10; Enayet’s younger brother Habib, 30; Enayet’s niece Ayesha, 19; and Abul Kalam Rubel, 35.
Enayet’s nephew Sazed Matabbar said Rubel and Sonia live in the second-floor flat where the explosion occurred. Rubel works as a motorcycle ride-share driver. Enayet is a Dubai expatriate who returned to Bangladesh recently.
Sazed said early in the morning, an explosion occurred in the second-floor flat. Hearing a loud blast, residents rushed out and saw that parts of the ground-floor and second-floor walls had collapsed. All 10 people inside the flat suffered burn injuries.
Sub-Inspector Nure Alam Siddique of Turag police station said it is suspected that gas leaked from a pipeline during the night and accumulated inside the room. When someone tried to light a fire in the morning, the explosion occurred. However, no comment from the fire service was immediately available.
Residential surgeon Shawon Bin Rahman said Sonia suffered 100% burns, Rubel 32%, Roza 18%, Habib 19%, Riya 32%, Enayet 45%, Delera 14%, Junayed 24%, Ayesha 12%, and Abul Kalam Rubel 7%.
