HC orders vote recount in Bagerhat-1 constituency

Published : Thursday, 5 March, 2026 at 8:11 PM  Count : 148

The High Court (HC) on Thursday instructed the authorities concerned to recount the votes of Bagerhat-1 constituency in response to a writ filed by the area’s defeated BNP candidate.

Justice Jakir Hossain ordered the recount after the writ petitioner and BNP-nominated candidate Kapil Krishna challenged the results that showed Jamaat-e-Islami won the seat in the 12 February nationwide polls.

Advocate Hasanul Alam, a member of Kapil Krishna’s legal team, informed reporters about the court’s instructions.

Kapil lost by 3,376 votes to Jamaat candidate Maulana Mashiur Rahman. The constituency consists of three upazilas – Chitalmari, Fakirhat and Mollahat – and 147 polling centres. It is one of the four constituencies in the district, and Jamaat won in all of them in the elections.
