A Dhaka court on Wednesday set November 5 as the deadline for submitting the probe report in the murder case involving journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, deferring it for the 130th time.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the order after the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) failed to submit the report on the scheduled date, said prosecution division sub-inspector Rafikul Islam.
Sagar and Runi were murdered at their rented flat in the city’s West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012, in the presence of their four-year-old son, Mahir Sarwar Megh. Runi’s brother, Nawser Alam, later filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police initially investigated the case before it was transferred to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). RAB failed to submit the investigation report despite seeking 111 extensions over 12 years.
On September 30, 2024, the High Court ordered the formation of a high-powered task force through the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the case.
The government formed a four-member task force on October 23, 2024, through a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, naming the PBI as its convener.
