Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested Mizanur Rahman, son-in-law of son-in-law of Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker of Kushtia-2 Md Abdul Gafur in connection with a case filed over an attack on New Gini Properties in Dhaka's ECB Chattar area.
A team of the DB’s Gulshan division arrested him during an operation in the Dhaka’s Paschim Matikata area on Monday afternoon.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed the arrest.
According to DB sources, Mizanur is named as accused No. 9 in the case filed with Cantonment Police Station over the attack on New Guinea Properties. The case was filed on Sunday.
He was arrested over his alleged involvement in the attack, and legal proceedings against him are underway, the sources said.
Mizanur’s father is Nurul Islam, and his permanent address is at Holy Apartment Limited in Paschim Matikata, Cantonment.
Earlier, on Saturday night, around 50 people allegedly entered the project area of New Guinea Properties Limited and launched an attack. They reportedly fired around 50 rounds indiscriminately and attacked people with machetes, knives and sticks.
Several people, including site engineer Md Parvez, were seriously injured in the attack.
At one point, the attackers allegedly entered the studio of content creator Salman Muqtadir, known as ‘Brown Fish’, and vandalised and looted it.
According to the allegations, cash, laptops, computers, electrical cables, cameras and professional media equipment were taken from the New Guinea Properties project area. Several vehicles were also vandalised.
When Cantonment police arrived after receiving information about the incident, the attackers allegedly opened fire at the police as well. Police fired five shotgun rounds in self-defence and to bring the situation under control.
Two people were arrested from the scene, while another was later arrested during a police operation.
Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, an official of the project, filed a case with Cantonment Police Station on the day of the incident over the attack, vandalism and looting.
The case names 13 individuals as accused, while another 150 to 200 unidentified people have also been accused.
