A clash broke out between hawkers and police during an eviction drive against illegal footpath occupants at Mirpur-10 in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The situation escalated after a fire broke out in the area following an electrical short circuit. Amid the ensuing chaos, angry hawkers and local traders vandalised a Dhaka North City Corporation garbage truck and set it on fire.
Confirming the matter, Mirpur model police station officer-in-charge Hafizur Rahman said that additional police personnel had been deployed to bring the situation under control.
‘We are trying to control the situation. Hawkers and local traders are currently in control of the area, and tension remains high,’ he said.
Fire Service Central Control Room duty officer Rakib Hossain said that three firefighting units went to the spot to bring the fire under control.
