The government said there was no shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Bangladesh and warned that action would be taken against anyone hoarding the fuel to create public discontent.
Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, the prime minister’s adviser on information and broadcasting, made the remarks at a press briefing on Tuesday at the Secretariat, where he outlined progress on various government activities.
Citing National Board of Revenue data, Zahed said Bangladesh imported 157,760 metric tons of LPG in August and another 118,000 metric tons in September so far.
He said data presented at the briefing showed the country’s LPG supply and stock levels remained satisfactory.
LPG importers and operators had also assured the Minister of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources that there was no shortage in the domestic market, he said. The assurance came at a recent meeting on LPG imports, stocks, supply and market prices.
Zahed said LPG prices had risen in some areas despite adequate stocks and urged vigilance against hoarding intended to create public dissatisfaction.
He added that speculative trends in global commodity markets could also be contributing to price increases and said the government was monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures.
