Three people were killed and at least seven others injured when a truck, which had broken down due to a mechanical fault, crashed into an auto-rickshaw in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat on Monday morning.
The accident took place in the Ghunti area of Burimari Union on the Burimari-Lalmonirhat highway.
According to police and locals, a passenger auto-rickshaw was travelling towards Patgram from Burimari Land Port. When it reached the Ghunti area, a truck heading towards the land port from the opposite direction suffered a mechanical failure and crashed into the auto-rickshaw.
The truck then veered into a roadside shop and crushed the auto-rickshaw, leaving two people dead on the spot and at least eight others injured.
Fire Service personnel from Patgram and local residents rescued the injured and took them to Patgram Upazila Health Complex, where another injured passenger, identified as Mostakin, died.
Five of the injured were referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition, while two others were admitted to Patgram Upazila Health Complex.
The identities of the deceased and injured could not immediately be confirmed. However, authorities believe they were residents of Patgram upazila.
Patgram Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam confirmed the incident, saying officers had been sent to the scene after receiving the information.
“So far, we have learned that three people were killed and seven others injured in the accident,” he said.
