A Dhaka court on Monday denied bail to 27 people who were detained from the central office of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSad) in the capital’s Paltan area on Saturday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter denied the bail petitions after a hearing, said court sources.
During the hearing, defence lawyer Nilanjona Rifat Surovi and others pleaded for bail, which the prosecution opposed.
Earlier on Sunday, police produced them before the court under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and sought their detention in jail.
Later, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam sent the accused to jail and fixed Monday for hearing the bail petitions.
The accused are Md Didarul Alam Tuhin, 50, Iman Ahmed Emon, 45, Molla Md Shahjahan Siraj, 38, Joy Sarker, 31, Md Miraj Ahmed, 19, Md Miraj Mallick, 39, Md Rabiul Islam, 28, Milan Kumar Mahanta, 39, Md Kawsar Hossain, 55, Sri Anjan Shil, 30, Jalal Uddin Mondal, 52, Abdul Latif, 46, Shamim Ahmed, 35, Ahmed Ahsan Habib, 43, Md Sujon Ali, 32, Md Tasikul Islam, 37, Md Saifullah Sayek, 45, Nayan Ali, 30, Sajidul Islam Tuhin, 40, Tajul Islam, 34, Nishkar Samrat Hossain Talukdar, 43, Anwar Hossain, 32, Md Alamgir Hossain, 45, Md Al Amin Howlader, 39, Md Tushar Ali, 30, Md Rashidul Haque, 44, and Mir Muktisur Rahman, 31.
According to the police petition, the accused allegedly created an unstable and disorderly situation inside the JaSad central office on Saturday and chanted the “Joy Bangla” slogan.
Police later detained them with the assistance of people present at the scene. The detainees, however, allegedly failed to provide satisfactory explanations when questioned about their presence at the office.
Police said they had a preliminary suspicion that the accused might be involved in a cognisable offence and that keeping them in custody was necessary for proper investigation.
