Morning rain causes suffering for commuters in Dhaka

Heavy rain lashed different parts of the capital on Sunday morning after midnight showers, bringing slight relief from the heat but causing suffering for officegoers and students.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the well-marked low over the southwest Bay and adjoining west-central Bay has weakened into a low-pressure area over the same region. Its extension also stretches to West Bengal and adjoining areas.

The rain that began late Saturday night slightly eased the heatwave conditions in the city. However, Sunday morning’s downpour disrupted movement across the capital, with many officegoers and students seen travelling in the rain.

The rainfall also triggered severe traffic congestion in different parts of Dhaka, causing further suffering for commuters.

In its inland river port forecast valid until 1pm on Sunday, the Met Office said temporary rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty or squally winds at speeds of 45-60kmph may occur over the regions of Rangpur, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogra, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Kushtia, Faridpur, Madaripur, Comilla, Noakhali and Sylhet.

River ports in these areas have been advised to hoist cautionary signal No 1.

In its 24-hour forecast from 9am, the Met Office said light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds are likely at many places in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions.

Moderately heavy to heavy rainfall may also occur at places in Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, it added.
