The government on Thursday approved the formation of Bogura City Corporation and five new upazilas.
The approval came at the 120th meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR), held at the Secretariat in the afternoon with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair.
The newly created upazilas are Mokamtola, formed by splitting Shibganj upazila in Bogura; Matamuhuri, formed by dividing Chakaria upazila in Cox’s Bazar; Ruhia and Bhully, formed by splitting Sadar upazila in Thakurgaon; and Chandraganj, created by dividing Sadar upazila in Lakshmipur.
At the meeting, the Local Government Division presented summaries regarding the formation of Bogura City Corporation and the creation of the new upazilas.
With the inclusion of Bogura, the number of city corporations in the country will rise from 12 to 13, while the total number of upazilas in Bangladesh will increase from 495 to 500.
