Govt plans to spend 5% of GDP on education: Minister

The government is ready to spend 5% of the country’s economic output on the education sector to radically improve qualities, said Minister Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Thursday.

The government is committed to ensure adequate investment in the sector to upskill the future generations, he said at a programme held at a hotel in the capital.

The ousted Awami League government never spent more than 1.5% on education during its undemocratic 15-year rule, the minister noted.

Ehsanul Hoque Milon also noted that the government is advancing towards setting up interactive digital classrooms at all educational institutions across the country.

The Awami regime introduced the idea but the project alarmingly short of accountability, transparency and effectiveness, the minister said.

The Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin was also present at the event.

He highlighted that the quality of teachers and educational infrastructure should be reformed and elevated to a level that encourages the youth to make teaching their first choice for career development.
