The government plans to establish an “international-standard” airport in Bogura, alongside a flying academy and a modern airbase to produce skilled pilots, said members of a delegation that visited the site today to assess feasibility.
The delegation was led by Civil Aviation Minister Afroza Khanam Rita. Civil Aviation State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, LGRD State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, and Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan also visited the Bogura airport area by a special helicopter of the Bangladesh Air Force.
Speaking to reporters, Afroza Khanam said, “We came here following the prime minister’s directive. The people of Bogura are fortunate because the first international-standard airport in the northern region will be built here.”
She added that a flying academy would be set up alongside the airport to produce skilled pilots and develop Bogura into a major aviation hub.
State Minister Rashiduzzaman said the government aims to launch the airport as soon as possible in line with the prime minister’s commitment.
Briefing journalists, Mir Shahe Alam said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had announced at a public rally at Altafunnesa playground that an international airport with cargo facilities would be launched in Bogura within a short time.
Following the announcement, the Prime Minister’s Office issued a directive, after which the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism began work on the project.
He added that the existing Bogura airport is currently used by the Bangladesh Air Force as a training school, while the Air Force chief has announced plans to establish the northern region’s first state-of-the-art airbase there.
Mir Shahe Alam said the proposed flying academy will train both Air Force and private-sector pilots, while a 10,500ft runway will be developed for the international airport.
He further said the airport would support both passenger and cargo operations, including exports of agricultural produce and light engineering goods, and is expected to boost investment and employment in the northern region.
Bogura-6 lawmaker Rezaul Karim Badsha and Bogura-4 lawmaker Mosharraf Hossain were also present during the visit.
