The Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Chittagong organized “DNA Festival 2026” on Tuesday, April 28, marking the 73rd anniversary of the discovery of DNA. The day-long event was held at the department’s conference room.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Al-Forkan attended as the chief guest, while Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin and Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences Professor Dr. Md. Golam Kibria were present as special guests. The program was chaired by Department Head Professor Dr. Laila Khaleda.
In his speech, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the growing importance of RNA-based research in modern science and encouraged greater focus on advanced genetic studies. He also highlighted the department’s contributions to the university’s academic reputation.
Professor Dr. Kamal Uddin noted the increasing role of DNA testing in disease diagnosis and criminal identification, calling for further research in the field.
The event featured poster and photo exhibitions, quiz competitions, and discussion sessions. Keynote speaker Dr. Tahmeena Shirin, Director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), presented on genomic surveillance and public health security.
Kai Huang Henry from BGI Genomics, China, spoke on the applications of multi-omics technologies in modern diagnostics and therapeutics.
The program concluded with prize distribution among participants. Speakers expressed optimism that DNA research will continue to open new horizons in healthcare and science.
