At least nine coaches of the “Nil Sagar Express” derailed in Santahar of Bugura on Wednesday afternoon, snapping rail communication between Dhaka and the northern region.
The incident occurred around 2:30pm at Tilakpur, between Santahar and Adamdighi, while the train was heading to Nilphamari.
Sub-Inspector of Santahar Railway Police Mahfuzur Rahman said, “The train departed Dhaka and stopped at Santahar station around 2pm. Shortly after leaving the station, it derailed, with nine coaches going off the tracks.”
Officer-in-Charge of Adamdighi Police Station Ataur Rahman said they have received reports of multiple casualties, but the exact number is yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, two salvage trains from Ishwardi in Pabna and Parbatipur in Dinajpur have left for the spot.
