An assistant professor of social welfare at Islamic University was stabbed to death this afternoon allegedly by an employee. The accused, identified as one Fazlu, later attempted to take his own life, according to university authorities.
The victim, Asma Sadia Runa, was assaulted in the department around 4:00pm. Proctor Shahinuzzaman said he rushed to the spot upon receiving news of the incident.
“I found Asma Sadia Runa lying on the floor with her face covered by a scarf. Fazlu was also rolling on the ground in a bloodied state." The proctor said both were sent to hospital.
He said the officer-in-charge of Islamic University Police Station also arrived at the scene.
After killing the teacher, the university employee attempted suicide, the proctor said, adding students witnessed the incident and saw him stabbing himself in the throat.
Proctor Shahinuzzaman said the employee had been working at the university on a daily basis for several years. He had earlier had an altercation with the teacher over an issue and was later transferred to another department, he added.
“Both the teacher and the staffer were brought to the hospital around 5:00pm in critical condition. Runa died shortly afterwards. Fazlu's condition remains critical,” said Hossain Imam, a doctor at the 250-bed Kushtia General Hospital.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Mirpur Circle) Mahmudul Haque Majumder told that, “I have heard about the incident. I am heading to the scene. At the moment.” He did not have any further details at that time.
