The government will allocate the most funds for the education sector in the country’s history in the upcoming budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, said Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Thursday.
The ministry has requested Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to allocate 3.5% of the country's total economic output for the education sector for the fiscal year starting 1 July, he told reporters after attending a meeting with the PM at the Secretariat.
The PM has assured of 2% allocation, which is still the highest in the history of Bangladesh budgets, the minister said.
The total allocation for education would be worth around Tk1.23 lakh crore, Ehsanul Hoque Milon said.
The government will also relaunch the Teachers’ Welfare Trust and post-retirement handouts through bulk allocation within a month, the minister noted. The funds for these schemes remain halted since 2022 as the authorities concerned embezzled several thousand crore taka during the Awami League regime, he added.
