The government is set to begin implementing a new pay scale for public sector officers and employees from 1 July, marking the first salary revision in more than a decade.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury is expected to announce the measure while presenting the Tk938,000 crore national budget for fiscal year 2026-27 in Parliament on Thursday afternoon.
According to the budget data, government employees have been receiving salaries and allowances under the same pay structure for nearly 11 years. During this period, inflation has significantly increased living costs, prompting the government to introduce a revised pay structure.
The implementation, however, will be gradual. Sources said the new pay scale may take up to three fiscal years to be fully implemented, with around 50% of the revised basic salary likely to take effect in the upcoming fiscal year.
Despite the announcement of a new pay scale, the proposed budget does not show a substantial increase in direct allocations for salaries and allowances. The government has earmarked Tk89,380 crore for salaries and allowances in FY2026-27, compared with Tk84,739 crore in the revised budget for the current fiscal year.
Of the proposed allocation, Tk13,874 crore has been set aside for the salaries of cadre officers, Tk30,671 crore for employees' salaries, and Tk44,835 crore for various allowances.
To support the broader public administration sector, the government is expected to allocate Tk141,434 crore, which is 96% higher than the Tk72,024 crore allocated in the original budget for FY2025-26. The allocation was later revised to Tk86,862 crore, meaning the proposed allocation for the next fiscal year is nearly Tk8855,000 crore higher than the revised figure.
