A man was stabbed to death and another critically injured by unidentified assailants in Patiya upazila of Chattogram last night.
The deceased was identified as Pankaj Shil, 35, of Joulur Dighi area under Kachuai union.
The injured, Tilak Chakraborty, 35, is undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in critical condition, police said.
Quoting locals, Patiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ziaul Haque said Pankaj and Tilak were returning home from a local market when they reached the western side of Joulur Dighi around 9:00pm. At that time, they noticed three suspicious individuals, one of whom was wearing a burqa.
When the two flashed torchlights towards them, the assailants allegedly attacked them with sharp weapons, leaving both critically injured.
Locals rescued the victims and took them to Patiya Upazila Health Complex. They were later shifted to CMCH where Pankaj died around 11:30pm.
Law enforcers visited the scene and detained one person for questioning, although the detainee's identity was not immediately disclosed.
The OC said drives were underway to identify and arrest those involved, adding that, "Police are investigating the incident to determine the motive behind the killing."
