The proportionate representation (PR) system would curb the people’s power to elect their desired lawmakers, and give political parties the ultimate authority in the matter, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday.
The BNP leader made the remark when speaking at a views exchange meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Christian Forum at the party Chairperson’s Office in Gulshan.
To the parties seeking speedy elections, it is not clear why some are demonstrating with the demand for including PR system in the February elections, he said. The issue has to be left to the next parliament to decide.
For the time being, the people don’t even understand what PR system is, let alone cast votes under this system, Fakhrul claimed.
If BNP wins elections, the next parliament would have an upper house for the first time in the country’s history, and in the upper chamber, representatives from all communities will be included, he told the Christian leaders during the event.
Furthermore, BNP would also address the crisis of 400 million unemployed people, and resolve the issue within one and a half year.
The next elections will once again prove that Bangladeshis want a non-communal country, he said.
Christian Lawyers’ Association President Father Albert Rozario president over the event, and Christian Forum General Secretary Anil Leo Costa served as the moderator.
