Journalists in Satkhira formed a human chain demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the killing of Bagerhat-based journalist ASM Hayat Uddin.
The demonstration was held on Saturday (October 11) at Shaheed Alauddin Square in Satkhira town, organized by the Satkhira Press Club.
The event was presided over by Abul Kasem, Staff Reporter of Independent TV, while Asaduzzaman of Bangla Vision and BSS conducted the program.
Among others, Kalyan Banerjee ( Prothom Alo), Momtaz Ahmed Bapi (Somoy TV), Amina Bilkis Moina (Channel 24), Barun Banerjee (Ekattor TV), Ahsan Rajib (Ekhon TV), M Belal Hossain (DBC News), Akramul Islam (Jamuna TV), S M Biplob Hossain (Daily Manabzamin), Asaduzzaman Sardar (Bangla Tribune & Khulna Gazette), Habibul Bashar Farhad (Star News), and Kishore Kumar (Daily Samakal) spoke at the event.
Speakers alleged that the state has failed to ensure the safety of journalists, leading to repeated incidents of attacks and killings across the country. “A nation cannot move forward this way,” they said, criticizing both the government and law enforcement agencies for their negligence.
They further mentioned that several journalists in Satkhira, Khulna, Jashore, and Bagerhat have been murdered or attacked in the past, yet justice has been denied in most cases. The speakers urged for exemplary punishment of Hayat Uddin’s killers and guaranteed safety for journalists across Bangladesh.
