The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an inquiry into a series of serious corruption allegations centering on Chattogram Port, the country’s busiest maritime gateway. A two-member special ACC team is now investigating how an influential syndicate allegedly embezzled millions in state funds over several years.
According to ACC sources, a powerful group of officials and contractors at the port has long been implicated in irregularities involving container handling, cargo transport, procurement, and contract awards. The investigation team has begun collecting documents and questioning officials linked to these alleged malpractices.
Rear Admiral S. M. Moniruzzaman, the current chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority, took office on August 11 last year, succeeding Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail. Former chairman Sohail was arrested on August 20 on multiple charges, including corruption, abduction, and murder, and remains in custody.
Before joining the port, Rear Admiral Moniruzzaman served as Managing Director of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC). He also held senior positions at DEW Ltd., Sena Kalyan Sangstha, and the Chattogram Naval Command. The senior naval officer is currently abroad on an official visit.
Port sources said several projects and contracts initiated under the former chairman are now under review, with some suspended pending reassessment. The ACC’s findings may lead to a full-scale investigation, they added.
Allegations suggest that a powerful network of officials and contractors within the port administration exploited frequent leadership changes to misappropriate government funds. Many are accused of using their positions to manipulate contracts, recruitment, and supply systems for mutual benefit.
ACC officials confirmed that the inquiry is ongoing and that initial evidence points to significant financial irregularities. “Necessary actions will be taken once the verification process is complete,” an ACC representative said.
