Samanta slams interim govt advisers

Samanta Sharmin, senior joint convener of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), criticized the interim government on Sunday, saying that each of its advisers is only looking out for their own interests.

“Not only that, this interim government has positioned itself against the people and stands against the country’s education system,” she said while expressing solidarity with the MPO-listed teachers during their sit-in at the Central Shaheed Minar around 4:30 PM.

Earlier, from 10:00 AM, MPO-listed teachers from private educational institutions had begun a sit-in in front of the National Press Club. Around 12:15 PM, a teachers’ delegation went to the Ministry of Finance at the Secretariat for a meeting with officials.

The teachers’ leaders said that the meeting did not yield any concrete assurances. By 1:00 PM, they returned to the Press Club and made two announcements: first, they would continue their sit-in at the Shaheed Minar instead of the Press Club and would not leave Dhaka until their demands were met; second, they would start an indefinite class boycott from Tuesday.

Following the announcement, a group of teachers led by Principals Main Uddin and Azizi marched toward the Shaheed Minar. Another group stayed at the Press Club, insisting on a long march toward the Secretariat, refusing to proceed to the Shaheed Minar.

At around 1:50 PM, police moved in to disperse the remaining teachers at the Press Club. Initially, water cannons and sound grenades were used, followed by baton charges. Several teachers fell to the ground and were injured during the operation.
