Chattogram Nagorik Parishad, a group representing Bangalee communities in the hill tracts, has announced a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Bandarban next Monday, protesting the “decades of discrimination” against Bangalees in the region.

The movement has been announced to press home eight demands, the group’s Chairman Kazi Md Mazibur Rahman said at a press conference held at a residential hotel in the district on Thursday morning.

Bangalees in the three hill tract districts – Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban – have for long been denied of their constitutional rights in the region, the activist alleged.

Colleges, government offices, government vehicles, law enforcers, ambulances, food stores, medicine stores, and journalists would be kept out of the purview of the demonstrations, he added.

The eight demands include: repealing the “farcical” British-era “Chittagong Hill Tracts Regulation of 1900” and introducing an administrative system for the three hill districts in accordance with the Constitution; aligning land trading and management system in the three districts with the regulations applicable for the rest of the country; restoring the withdrawn 246 army camps in the hill tract region; arresting terrorists to establish lasting peace in the hill districts; recovering illegal arms, stopping extortion, abduction, killing, and rape; ensuring equal rights and justice by eliminating discrimination in education, healthcare, business, and employment; and establishing environment-friendly brick kilns, factories, and industries in the three hill districts.
