Ali Riaz stresses on ‘notes of dissent’ when implementing July Charter

Prof Ali Riaz, vice president of the National Consensus Commission, has said that the "notes of dissent" from political parties on the July National Charter 2025 must be taken into account during its implementation.

Speaking at the fifth round of talks with political parties today, Prof Riaz said not all parties agreed on every point of the Charter and the public must be made aware of these objections when the referendum is held.

"In the July National Charter, since there are some notes of dissent, we must take them into account. The political parties who submitted them have done so based on their own positions and other considerations," he said.

Riaz stressed the importance of transparency, saying that people should know where parties have expressed disagreement before giving their consent through the referendum.

He added that the commission would compile a final proposal reflecting the opinions and objections of the political parties and submit it to the government.

"If a clear and specific proposal comes from your side, the commission will present that to the government and request that it be implemented," he said.

The commission aims to submit its final recommendations by October 10 and hold a formal signing ceremony for the July Charter between October 15 and 16.

Riaz expressed optimism about the progress made so far, noting that political parties have reached a consensus on holding a referendum.

"When we first sat on Sept 11, there were doubts about whether we could reach common ground. But we have moved a long way forward," he said.
