At least three people were killed and 20 others injured after two buses of Palki Paribahan and Hanif Paribahan collided on the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway in Madaripur’s Shibchar upazila on Friday.
The accident took place at Madborer Kandi bus stand in Bakherkandi area of the expressway around 3:30pm.
The deceased include a father and his son, locals said.
According to locals, a bus of Palki Paribahan was parked on one side of the expressway due to technical problems. The driver and his assistant was trying to repair the tyres, when a bus of Hanif Paribahan coming from Barguna to Dhaka lost its control and rammed into the parked bus from behind.
Both buses were damaged in the accident, and three people lost their lives on the spot, they added.
Hearing the sound of the collision, locals rushed to the spot and began rescue operations. Being informed, members from fire service and police reached the spot, rescued the injured and sent them to hospital for treatment.
Locals further said the conditions of some of the injured are critical.
Officer of Bhanga Fire Service Station Abu Zafar said, “Upon receiving information about the accident around 3:50pm, a fire service team reached the spot and began rescue operation. Efforts are on to remove the two buses from the road and normalise the vehicular movement.”
“The identities of the deceased and the injured could not be known immediately. Details will be known after finishing the rescue operation and preliminary investigation,” he added.
