A four- to five-day-old baby girl was rescued alive after being found inside a black polythene bag beside a road in the capital’s Mirpur on Wednesday evening.The newborn was found near Road No. 8 in D Block under Shah Ali Police Station after a passer-by heard her crying and alerted the national emergency service 999.
Responding to the call, a team from Shah Ali Police Station rushed to the spot and rescued the baby.
Police initially took her to Dhaka Shishu Hospital, where she received primary treatment. She was later admitted to the paediatric department of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital as her condition was critical, police said.
Hasan Mohammad Naser Rikabdar, deputy commissioner of the Mirpur Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told The Financial Post on Thursday afternoon that the newborn was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
“Two police personnel are maintaining constant contact with the hospital and monitoring her treatment,” he said.
According to Shah Ali police, a man called 999 on Wednesday evening and reported that a newborn had been left inside a black polythene bag in an open area beside Road No. 8 in D Block.
The emergency service subsequently alerted Shah Ali Police Station and instructed police to take immediate steps to rescue the child.
Police are yet to determine who left the newborn at the spot and why she was abandoned.
