Embattled MP and suspended Jamaat leader Gazi Nazrul Islam’s second wife Mariam was buried beside her grandparents at their family graveyard in Gabura of Shyamnagar upazila early Tuesday.
An ambulance carrying her body left Dhaka on Monday afternoon and reached Kashirhatkhola in Koyra, Khulna.
The body was then taken by a trawler along the river route to her family home in Gabura around 11:30pm.
With police security and assistance from local residents, family members completed the bathing and funeral prayers for Mariam shortly after the body arrived.
She was then buried beside her grandparents at the family graveyard.
Former village police member Golam Rahman said Mariam had lived in Dhaka since childhood.
“She used to study in Dhaka and had also appeared in the SSC examination. I cannot accept that such a tragedy happened to her at such a young age,” he said.
Her body was recovered from the MP’s flat at the NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital on Sunday evening.
