Nearly 1.23 lakh non-government teachers and employees are receiving retirement and welfare benefits on the birth anniversary of late BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon has said.
Speaking at the formal distribution of funds under the Non-Government Teachers and Employees Retirement and Welfare Trust at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium today (15 August), the minister said the benefits are being provided at a cost of Tk2,100 crore following the prime minister's directive.
A total of 70,019 teachers are receiving retirement benefits, while 53,000 are receiving welfare benefits, he said.
"On this day, following the prime minister's directive, we are taking steps to provide the long-awaited benefits to teachers," the minister said.
He added that several other initiatives under the education ministry were included in the government's 180-day programme, but could not be implemented within the stipulated timeframe.
