Students will be allowed to visit the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum free of charge once a week under a government initiative to familiarise them with the country’s history and major events.
Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman announced the initiative at a press conference held at the Press Information Department conference room at the Secretariat on Tuesday.
He said the government had taken a policy decision to designate one day a week for students to visit the museum without paying any admission fee.
Initially, students from higher classes will be taken to the museum under a government-arranged programme. The initiative will gradually be expanded to students from all schools, including private institutions.
The adviser said that the programme would not be limited to the July Uprising Museum. Similar arrangements would be made for students to visit the National Museum and other museums in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.
Museums under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs as well as those under other ministries will also be included in the initiative, he said.
Dr Zahed said that the July Uprising Museum had attracted considerable public interest since its opening. Although there were some management difficulties initially because of the large turnout, the situation was later brought under control.
He said the initiative would give students an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the country’s history, heritage and important events while encouraging them to develop an interest in museums.
