Unpaid wage protest triggers traffic chaos in Dhaka

Vehicular movement on both sides of Tejgaon Love Road remains suspended as workers of Nassa Group staged a sit-in programme today demanding payment of overdue wages, causing severe traffic congestion in several parts of Dhaka.

The protest triggered long tailbacks in Mohakhali, Farmgate, Tejgaon and adjoining areas, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

In a traffic alert, the Gulshan Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said the workers’ demonstration had blocked the road, resulting in heavy congestion on surrounding routes as well.

The traffic division requested motorists to avoid the area and use alternative routes depending on their destinations.

Shafiul Islam, an employee of a private firm, said it took him around 30 minutes by motorcycle to travel from Bailey Road to Karwan Bazar due to the gridlock.

“The traffic was not moving at all. I was stuck in Karwan Bazar for about 15 minutes before I got a chance to take a left turn and finally reached my office in Farmgate through Green Road,” he told reporters.

“No traffic signals were working because vehicles could not move towards Farmgate due to the heavy congestion,” he added.

Witnesses said the traffic situation continued to worsen as vehicles piled up on key roads connecting Tejgaon, Mohakhali and Farmgate.

Many commuters were forced to walk to reach their destinations.
