Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has urged the journalists to avoid undue praise of the government or any particular group, and called on the newsmen to instead present the truth objectively before the general people.
He also asked the media workers to extend assistance in bringing positive changes to the nation.
The premier made the call during a meeting with chief executive officers (CEO) and news editors of television channels held at the Secretariat on Monday.
At the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the challenges the country's television industry face, the professional difficulties encountered by journalists, job security, and issues related to media freedom.
Following the meeting, the Prime Minister's Press Secretary, Abu Abdullah M Saleh Shibli, briefed journalists.
He said, “Alongside making reports on economic and social development, the media must also play an important role in promoting humanitarian and social values. With this objective in mind, the government has taken the initiative to establish an independent Media Commission. To this end, a dialogue will be held with stakeholders on 18 June. If all stakeholders work together to develop a clear policy framework, it will be possible to resolve the existing problems in the media sector.”
Meanwhile, after the meeting, leaders of journalists' organizations said they had urged the government to develop the television industry into a fully recognized industrial sector. Media representatives also urged the government to implement the Ninth Wage Board for journalists, ensure their job security, and swiftly establish an effective Media Commission.
The journalists also called on the government for providing necessary security and safety measures for the journalists as well as providing assistance in developing an environment suitable for independent journalism.
