According to the information available, Benazir was apprehended in the United Arab Emirates in connection with multiple cases filed against him in Bangladesh over allegations of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income and money laundering.
The former police chief has been facing several corruption-related investigations and court proceedings.
Earlier, Bangladeshi authorities sought international assistance, including an Interpol Red Notice, to facilitate his arrest.
A senior official at Police Headquarters confirmed the information to the media on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the authorities were informed of the development through a letter sent on June 12.
Benazir Ahmed served as the IGP from April 2020 to September 2022, after completing his tenure as the director general of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from 2015 to 2020.
He fled the country on May 4, 2024 alongside his wife and three daughters amid investigation by the ACC into accumulation of illegal wealth.
