Former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who is facing corruption and money laundering charges, has been arrested in Dubai, according to an official statement made in Parliament by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.
Speaking under Rule 300 in the National Parliament on Sunday, the home minister confirmed that the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) informed Bangladesh via email on Friday that Benazir had been detained in connection with corruption-related allegations.
The minister told lawmakers that arrangements are underway to bring the former police chief back to Bangladesh as quickly as possible.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Bangladesh had previously requested INTERPOL to issue a red notice against Benazir.
Acting on that notice, security authorities in Dubai reportedly traced his location and detained him on Saturday night local time.
However, Dubai Police have not yet issued any official statement regarding the reported arrest.
