Two men were killed and at least 40 others injured yesterday after residents of two villages in Habiganj's Bahubal upazila clashed twice over a longstanding dispute regarding access to a road beside a local graveyard.
The deceased were identified as Selu Mia, 53, and Helal Mia, 37, both residents of Adityapur village, said Bahubal Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam.
Violence first broke out around 12.30pm when between 200 and 250 people from Adityapur and Arichpur villages confronted one another armed with locally made weapons, sharp instruments, sticks and bricks, the OC said.
Officers from the police station went to the scene and and restored order.
Tensions reignited around 6.30pm, however, when members of both groups clashed again at the nearby Dubai Bazar.
Both victims had been critically injured during the violence. Selu was taken to Bahubal Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Helal was referred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where he died en route around 11:00pm.
At least 40 others suffered injuries and are receiving treatment at various hospitals. Several of the seriously wounded have been transferred to Osmani Medical College Hospital for specialist care.
OC Saiful said police had restored calm after the midday clash. Representatives of both sides later went to the police station in an attempt to resolve the dispute, but violence broke out again before any settlement could be reached.
"The situation is now under control. One person has been arrested in connection with the incident, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend others involved," he said.
